"El Nuevo Aurora (A New Dawn)"
I wrote "El Nuevo Aurora" because I have always been moved by the people who keep singing when almost no one is listening. Aurora came to me first as a picture rather than a character. I saw a woman filing paperwork through the daylight hours and then standing in front of a half-attentive crowd at night, giving away everything she had for a scattering of applause. That kind of quiet persistence is everywhere in this country, and it rarely gets a song of its own. The story behind the song is what happens when someone in that situation finally gets the one thing they cannot manufacture alone, which is another person who believes in them and knocks on the door.
I made Nuevo a cousin rather than a stranger on purpose. Family carries history with it, and when he arrives from Ponce with a weathered case and an old Spanish guitar, he is not bringing rescue so much as recognition. He does not tell Aurora to abandon what she loves. He tells her to widen it, to let English and Spanish share the same melody, to let Florida and Puerto Rico meet inside one song.
